Genesis Biosciences recently collaborated with the University of Huddersfield on a study focusing on the effectiveness of Bacillus-based probiotic cleaners in mitigating dry biofilms that can be present on hospital surfaces.

The challenge

Surfaces in hospital and clinical settings can harbour microbial pathogens present in dry biofilms that contribute to the risk of infections and antimicrobial resistance.  The study aimed to investigate the use of Bacillus-based probiotic cleaners as a potential way to reduce surface pathogen biofilm formation.

About the study

The study focused on the effectiveness of Genesis Biosciences probiotic cleaners containing beneficial Bacillus strains, in mitigating dry biofilms that can be prevalent on a multitude of surfaces within the clinical setting. The primary objective was to understand how these cleansers could serve as a proactive measure against healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The results demonstrated the potential for Genesis’s probiotic cleaners to prevent and reduce the formation of dry biofilms, achieving an impressive reduction of over 97.7%. This efficacy spanned diverse surfaces, including steel, melamine, and ceramic, countering common pathogens like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
